CMPR103 FAQ

FAQ stands for Frequently Asked Questions. This page will be continually updated throughout the semester, with questions I receive regarding the operation of this course. Prior to emailing me with a question, check here to see if it is asked and answered here.

How do I start this class?

If you are reading this document, you must be at our class web site. This site has all the public information regarding or class. Read through all the pages on this site. Start with the main page for our class by clicking the link at the top that says CMPR103 Home. Once you've read through that page, look on the left side of the page, there you should see 5 links each representing the rest of our class pages. The following is a brief description of each of the 5 links to the left.

  • Online Readiness
    This link takes you to a web page that is an overview of online learning. It will also help you to assess whether you are ready to take an online class
  • Syllabus
    This link takes you to our class syllabus. This page gives you a description of the class, its goals and objectives. Information on your textbook, the format of this course as well as the final exam. It also informs you of the schools academic honesty policy and how I determine your final grades.
  • Course Outline
    This link takes you to our course outline, which lists all the assignments and their due dates.
  • Instructor
    Following this link will take you to a page that tell you a little about me.
  • FAQ
    As you know this link brought you to this our Frequently Asked Question" page, where you will hopefully find the answers to most of your questions.
  • Online Portal (Blackboard)
    The last link on the left "Online Portal (Blackboard)" will take you to the Blackboard site which has the private portion of our class. You should receive your Blackboard ID and Password in the mail from the Distance Learning office. If, by the first day of class, you have not received this information email me at lbscdeb@yahoo.com and I will track this information down for you.

How do I get onto Blackboard?

There is a link to Blackboard from our class web site. You see link on the left that says "Online Portal (Blackboard). Click that link and that will take you to the Blackboard main page. Login and then read the announcements, from there you'll want to follow the Syllabus link, then the Lectures link, then the Assignments link and the Discussion Board link.

What is the process for taking this class?

Follow these steps to get started with this class:

  1. From our class website follow the link on the left that says "Online Portal (Blackboard)". Click that link and that will take you to the Blackboard main page.
  2. Here you must click on the Login link to get you to the Blackboard Login page
  3. Here you must login by entering in your USERNAME and PASSWORD. Once you type in that information, click the Login link. This will take you to your main Blackboard welcome page.
  4. On the right you should see a list of the online classes you are currently enrolled in. Click the link for our class Computer Science 103, Internet and World Wide Web Essentials...
  5. This will bring you to the main Blackboard page for our class which displays the class announcements. Read the announcements, from there you'll want to click on the Syllabus link on the left side of the page if you wish to see the class Syllabus
  6. On the Class Syllabus page you will see a link to syllabus.htm, clicking this will bring you to the class syllabus. You will also see a link to calendar.htm which is our class calendar and printcal.htm, a print friendly version of our class calendar.
  7. Next click the Lectures link on the left side of the page. This brings you to the main Lectures page. Here you will see links to the current and prior weeks lectures.
  8. Click on the link for the lecture folder you want to read. That will bring you to the links for that weeks' lectures.
  9. Click the link, and read through the lecture.
  10. Once you've finished the lecture, you are ready to participate in that weeks discussion. Click the Discussion Board link on the left side of the page.
  11. For details on how to participate in the class discussion, see the FAQ - How do I participate in the class discussions? listed below.
  12. Once you've finished the discussion, you are ready to start the assignments. Click the Assignments link on the left side of the page.
  13. On that page you will see the Assignments Main page. Here you will see links to the current and prior weeks assignments. Click on the link for the assignments folder you want to do. That will bring you to the links for that weeks' assignments.
  14. On this page you'll see multiple items listed. The first one is the reading assignment (no link to click here). The other links (one or more) are to the actual assignments or projects for that week. Click the link of the assignment or project you wish to do.
  15. This will bring you to the actual assignment or project. You will read through and follow the instructions and answer the questions. You will then email me the answers. I'll then reply to your email, letting you know if it was correct. I will let you know of any incorrect answers so that you may fix them.
  16. You will follow this same process for each week's assignments. Once you've completed assignments, I will grade them. You can check your progress at any time by clicking on the Tools link on the left side. On this page you will see a link called Check Grade. Click that link and you'll see the all the assignments listed and the possible points and the amount of points given.
  17. Whenever you are done in Blackboard you should log out. You should notice at the very top of the web page (In the green area) there is a link called Logout. Click this and it will log you out of blackboard.

How do I get to the class assignments?

From our class web site you click the link on the left that says "Online Portal (Blackboard)". Click that link and that will take you to the Blackboard main page. Login and then you'll want to follow the Assignments link. You will then be at the main assignments page. Here you will see folders for the different weeks of class. Click on the link for the week you are looking for. Now you will see links to that weeks assignments.

When I get to the main assignments page, why don't I see all 8 weeks of assignments?

I make each assignment available on the Sunday prior to the start of the Week. So you will only see the links for the current weeks' assignments and the past weeks' assignments.

How do I participate in the class discussions?

To participate in the class discussions do the following:

  • Click on the link on the left side of the screen labeled "Discussion Board". This brings you to the page that lists the different class discussions.
  • Read the instructions under the "Week 1 Discussion - Introduce Yourself" link, and then click on this link. This will bring you to the Week 1 Discussion page. Here you'll see the postings by your fellow classmates.
  • Click on the "Thread" button at the top of the page. This brings you to the screen where you input the information I requested (Your discussion).
  • Type a descriptive subject and type your message. Once you've completed typing, click on the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page to post your discussion.
  • Once you've made your posting, you will need to reply to one of your fellow students postings (By Saturday). From the page where you see all the postings, click on the subject of one of your classmates postings to read what they wrote.
  • You should read through all of your classmates' postings. Then choose one to reply to.
  • To do the reply, do the following:
    • Select one of your classmates' postings by clicking on the subject of their posting.
    • Click the Reply button on the right, which will bring you to a screen like the one where you typed your posting, the difference is that the Subject area will automatically be filled in (leave it that way).
    • Now type in your reply in the message area, then click the "Submit" button to post your discussion.
  • You will follow this same process for each weeks discussion.
