General GIS Data Sources:

  • California Spatial Information Library (CASIL) - information on State government GIS activities, access to statewide GIS data, and links to the larger California GIS community.

  • The California Dept. of Forestry and Fire Protection, Fire and Resource Assessment Program - makes every effort to provide its data to the public free of charge in a format that is useable by the largest number of potential users.

  • ArcWeb Services gives you on-demand access to GIS data and capabilities and eliminate the overhead of purchasing and maintaining large data sets.

  • ESRI Data & Maps created by experts and designed to fit your business needs.

  • Geodata.gov is part of the Geospatial One-Stop E-Gov initiative providing access to geospatial data and information.

  • Geography Network is a collaborative, multiparticipant system for publishing, sharing, and using digital geographic information on the Internet.

  • GIS Data Depot This site offers free data from all over the world, or you can pay a fee for a custom-cut CD.

  • GIS Monitor provides a good overview of public and commercial sources of data.

  • United States Geographical Survey multi-disciplinary science organization that focuses on study of the landscape, our natural resources, and the natural hazards that threaten us.

  • Bureau of Transportation Statistics is responsible for transportation data collection, coordination and comparability and statistical analysis.

  • US Census TIGER files mapping service World Wide Web gateway for the census TIGER data at the U.S. Census Bureau. The goal of this service is to provide a public resource for generating high-quality, detailed maps of anywhere in the United States, using public geographic data.

  • U.S. Board on Geographic Names provides a conduit through which uniform geographic name usage is applied and current names data is disseminated.Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is the Nation's official data base of place names. The GNIS is maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and can often provide information on name changes. This data base contains 2 million entries, including the names of places that no longer exist, as well as variant names for existing places.

  • FirstGov U.S. Government Official Web Portal, Search “GIS Data” for more than 1,000 relevant sites.

  • BEST Database Query Tool Biomonitoring of Environmental Status and Trends is a searchable dataset currently contains information on contaminant concentrations, fish health indicators and reproductive biomarkers.

  • Gap Analysis Data Warehouse provides geographic information on the status of ordinary species and their habitats.

  • GeoMac Wildland Fire Support Geospatial Multi-Agency Coordination Group or GeoMAC, is an internet-based mapping application originally designed for fire managers to access online maps of current fire locations and perimeters in the conterminous 48 States and Alaska.

  • EROS Earth Resource Observation and Science: A leading source of land information for exploring our changing planet.
