Currently we are offering one GIS Classe, Introduction to GIS. This class is offered on Tuesday evenings from 7:00pm to 10:10pm. All students will receive a 1 year version of ArcView 9.2.
Course Description:
- Introduction to GIS - 3 Units
- Learn to use Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Course covers mapping and spatial analysis capabilities of ArcView software. Students are introduced to GIS, basic cartographic principles and will learn to use ArcView to view relationships, patterns, or trends by plotting data on maps, and its role in analysis and decision-making.
GIS is a collection of computer hardware, software, and geographic data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. Spring 2008 semester this course is offered in two 4 hour sessions on Tue. & Thu. April 1 & 3
GIS is a powerful tool that allows information to be linked to a location, such as people to addresses, crime to a demographic area, buildings to parcels or streets. Then we can layer that information to get a better understanding of how it works together. The layers you choose to display is based on the questions you need answered, or the problems you need to solve. Some examples include voting patterns based on demographics, where to open a new business, criminal activity based on demographics. By combining data and applying some analytic rules, you can build a map that answers your questions or solves your problems.
Most agencies are using or moving towards utilizing GIS. At the same time, Increasingly more universities including faculty in different departments and administrators will be using GIS in their courses and research. The GeoSpatial industry is growing in the marketplace, commercially 100% each year .. and the users 35% each year. See links within the pages for more facts and information on the GIS industry.
We invite you to join us each semester, to attend our PSI GIS workshop (details on the right) to learn about and experience GIS mapping for yourself. Fore more information, contact GIS faculty, Debbie Crowley at gisdeb@yahoo.com
