- Are you ready to take an online class?
- This page will assist you in making that decision.
- What is Online Learning?
- Online learning allows students to take courses by computer. This computer can be at home, work, on campus, or anywhere with an Internet connection. Instead of driving to the campus, you can attend class via the Internet and email. This allows you the flexibility to learn when and where you want. All assignments and lectures will be online. This gives students the ability to fit education in with family and work responsibilities.
- What is the scoop on this online class?
- This is not a "self-paced" class. All assignments and discussions have a due date. It is just as important to keep up with the class pace as with a traditional face-to-face class. In fact with the Class Discussions it is even more important due to the nature of the activity. Once the due date for the discussion has come and gone, you will not be able to participate, and you will loose grade points for that activity.
- Can I do it?
- Yes you can if you fit the right profile. A successful online student is self-motivated, responsible, disciplined, has good time management skills, and knows when to ask for assistance.
- How do I know if I possess these attributes?
- Start by taking the following self-evaluation:
California Virtual Campus Student Skills Quiz
After taking this quiz, if you feel you fit the profile continue on.
- What computer skills do I need?
- General knowledge of basic PC operations, especially hands-on experience with Windows, Windows-based software and mouse operation.
You should have hands-on computer experience opening and saving files. You should also have basic hands-on experience accessing the Internet and using a Browser and the ability to get to the class web site. (If you are reading this, you most likely possess this skill.) You should also be able to send a basic email.
If you are new to computing you may need to spend extra time outside of class using a computer and allow additional time for completing projects.
- Now take the
California Virtual Campus Technical Skills Quiz.
Don't worry if you don't know how to attach a file to an email, you will be taught how to do this in class.
Any questions on your computer skills, please email me Debbie Crowley with your concerns, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can!
